Atlantic City Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Burying my Dead Dog in the Backyard

To many people, a dog is part of the family. They often start showing signs of age and are euthanized by veterinarians. Hard as this may be, it does make it easier to deal with the body. Some companies will fetch your pet from the vet and cremate them for you. If your pet passes away at home you need to decide whether you are going to spend the money to have them cremated, or bury them on your property for free.

How to bury them
As soon as an animal dies, it starts to decompose. If your pet dies during the night, chances are that it will have been dead for a few hours by the time you wake up. They could even be in rigor mortis. This will make it difficult for you to manipulate the limbs. It is best to wear gloves and protective clothing when picking up your pet. Place them on an old blanket or towel and wrap them tightly. If you are going to store the body for a while, it is best to wrap them in plastic too. Keep the body in a freezer or cold place until you have decided what to do with it. If you are going to bury it in your backyard, you need to ensure that you dig a deep enough hole. If you bury the dog too close to the surface it will be dug up by scavengers. You will need to remove the plastic wrapping before you bury it as this will not decompose. You can also place it in a cardboard or wooden box. It is advisable to check your local laws regarding burying your pet on your own property. Most states have their own laws regarding this. It will depend on the zoning of the property as well as its proximity to water. You will not be allowed to bury your pet on state land. You can contact your local animal control or mayor's office to find out what your options are.

Other options
If you are not able to bury your dog in your backyard, there are other options that you can consider.
• Many people opt to have their pet cremated. You will have the option of a private cremation, which is more expensive, or a communal cremation. If you please, you can collect the ashes and keep it close. You can search for a company on the internet, or you can work through your vet. They will organize that your dog is collected from your home.
• Some areas have a pet cemetery where you can purchase plots of land where you can bury your pet. This will allow you to erect a commemorative plaque, and you can visit your pet as often as you'd like. This also prevents the heartbreak of moving and leaving your beloved pet buried in someone else's backyard.
